Dennis
Haley
Inspired at age 11 by the
Moog Modular solo from Keith Emerson on Emerson, Lake & Palmer’s
Lucky Man, Dennis Haley began his unhurried transition from a
passionate music “listener” to a passionate music “practitioner”. Following
his muse, Haley developed his career path in the field of technology, laid
the foundation for his sound design, and began his life-long search for all
music “electronic”. He built a collection of recorded music and along with ELP,
the progressive music of YES, Genesis, Pink Floyd and the
electronic music of Tangerine Dream, SYNERGY and Wendy Carlos
would become the primary influence for his own musical exploration.
It was not until the mid
80s that Haley began to practice his craft, working as a recording engineer
for a small studio in the Philadelphia area, studying piano under Joseph
DiMattia and the late John Dougherty, playing in local bands
Streetwalker, and Feedback and exploring the aural landscapes
that would emerge from his first few synthesizers, a PAIA 4700, KORG
POLYSIX and ROLAND JUPITER-6.
Over the next 10 years, he would amass an extensive collection of
synthesizers, many of which are beautiful vintage instruments and still in
use today. Since 1986 Haley has composed and recorded a number of original
works. In 1995 he released the tape Seven Seconds After... which
received positive reviews from Synthesis magazine and local airplay on the
Philadelphia radio program, WXPN’s STAR'S END. In 1996 he contributed "The
Shard" to the anthology CD, Electronic Music Project, which received
international exposure and positive reviews.
In 1997, Haley premiered
his electronic soundscapes in a live concert featuring selections from his
tape and future releases. This concert was sponsored by the Philadelphia
electronic music concert series, “The Gatherings” and opened up the
opportunity to perform over the next few years at select events including
multiple appearances at the ProgDay festival in North Carolina.
Recognized as an expert in the area of keyboard technology, Dennis enjoys
employing this knowledge in the support of other great musicians. Since the
early 90s, his contributions to the success of such Music Festivals as
The Gatherings Concert Series, ProgDay, NEARfest and ROSfest in the role
of Senior Keyboard Technician cannot go without mention. He also signed on
to the Par Lindh Project 1998, 99 and 2000 North American Tours to
manage Lindh’s massive keyboard rig. Haley is constantly consulted on
keyboard technology and continues to support this endeavor.
After long deliberation and fine-tuning of the original tape Seven
Seconds After… Haley decided the time was right to re-master, re-package
and re-release SSA retaining the magic of the original compositions enhanced
with the clarity of modern technology. Enlisting the production talents of
Michael Matera of Neverwhere Records, he signed to the
label and the album was re-released early in 2003. "We are extremely
excited about this new relationship with Dennis Haley," Matera said.
"Musically Dennis has consistently produced quality music on his own terms.
We are very proud to represent Dennis and look forward to spreading the word
about his great music." Upon hearing the music, Larry Fast (Tony Levin
Band, SYNERGY, Peter Gabriel) had this to say: "A collection of
recordings with more sonic depth and color than I have heard in a long time"
2005 will see the release of the highly anticipated sophomore effort, “The
Shard”, on Neverwhere Records. Haley’s crafting of otherworldly
atmospheres and painstaking attention to detail demand extended periods of
focus. Many of his compositions have evolved from concepts that have their
beginnings in the 80s and are realized on instruments spanning the last 30
years.
A native of the Philadelphia area, Haley now lives in Delaware where he
enjoys hours in his studio involved in the art of sound design, composition,
recording and performance. One of the artist still brave enough to bring out
an arsenal of keyboards and modules, his live shows demand the proper venue
but prove as stunning visually as they are sonically.
